Get straight to the heart of Orvieto on our Orvieto Tour. Explore the Umbrian way of life, visit this medieval styled village’s charming streets & squares.
This Umbrian beauty of a town sits upon steep cliffs of volcanic tuff. The region is famous for Etruscan ruins, a secret underground city, and of course its white wine.
One of many towns of Etruscan origins in the countryside north of Rome, Orvieto is built on an isolated rock, governing the valley of the Paglia River. The town is most noted for its great gothic cathedral, its Cathedral, The Duomo di Orvieto, built in the 14th century with blue volcanic basalt rock woven right into its architecture, and its white wine. The soil from the ancient volcano is the secret ingredient for the region’s white wine. The early Estruscans began digging into the rock and created shrines, passageways, and wells that still exist today.
Orvieto makes for an ideal day trip from Rome. A morning train ride takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Rome Termini Train Station to Orvieto Station. The cost of the roundtrip train ticket is approximately 16 Euros. Trains run til late evening so you could really spend the whole day there if you wished. This is Italy’s train schedule where you could check times. Enter “Roma Termini” as your departing train station and “Orvieto” as your arriving train station: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
From the train station, you take the cable car up to historic Orvieto and your Presto Guide meets you directly at the Orvieto Funicular Station (Stazione Funicolare) from where you set off together to explore the city.
After your tour, we absolutely recommend staying for a sit-down lunch or dinner in in a local restaurant as Orvieto has excellent cuisine, characteristic of Umbria. Trust us, you won’t want to miss out.
